Introducing the Aft engine bulk carrier: a small ocean-going ore carrier for your 1/300th scale (6mm) WW2 games. This model is also designed to work well together with the Seadog Game Studios line of tramp steamers.
Designer Brian Carnes was inspired by pictures and history of several ore ships from Australia that had been torpedoed/served during the war such as Iron Knight, Iron Chieftain, Iron warrior etc. These are all from one line. The BHP line, which seemed to use a mix of mid-engine and aft engine vessels and had ships from 331 to over 400 feet. They also had an obscure book about their ships linked off the company site for the interested history buff which also had information about using DEMS and other armaments carried during the war.
The goal of this model was not to represent these ships exactly, but a more general ship that will work in a lot of game scenarios, but Brian used the general arrangement of the BHP aft engine ships to inform this build. We offer a DEMS upgrade with guns and quick launch rafts so you can model it either unarmed (according to the book mentioned earlier, during the early war these ships often ran unarmed and by themselves! ) or armed for convoy service. Please select the version you would like when you add this to cart, or if you would like, you may select the two pack version which has parts to build one of each version!
This kit is 3D printed with a FDM hull, and SLA detail parts. This model is approximately 348mm long. She has a beam of about 58mm and a width at the bridge of 60mm. She’s about 109mm high from the waterline to mast top, and 69mm to the top of the smokestack.
This model features 3D printed parts: There are two types of 3D printed parts we use in our products. "FDM" is lower cost, and is what most would recognize as traditional 3D printing. This type of model printed in layers from thermal plastic (generally PLA or PETG), and is lightweight with reasonable detail but will have visible striation (or lines) that the hobbyist may want to clean up using putty, primer, or other hobby techniques. "SLA" is a laser cured photo-resin that has exceptional detail, and generally has a much smoother finish without significantly noticeable striation. This type of material is more expensive, and fine details can be more delicate. Some models may use either or both types of parts, and some models may have the ability for the buyer to select the print type under print options. These models are intended to be painted and may come in different colors.
