During the 13th century, a brigantine referred to a sail- and oar-driven war vessel, lateen rigged on two masts and had between eight and twelve oars on each side. Its speed, maneuverability, and ease of handling made it a favorite of Mediterranean pirates, thus its name is derived from the Italian word “brigantine,” which in turn is derived from “brigante” or "brigand.” Other than the name and having two masts, this vessel has no real relation to the later brigantines developed in Northern Europe.
The classic age of sail brigantine is a two-masted sailing vessel with a fully square-rigged foremast and a predominantly fore and aft rigged main mast. Some versions over the years also square topsail on the main mast. The main mast is the second and taller of the two masts.
The brigantine was the second-most popular rig for ships built in the British colonies in North America before 1775, the most popular being the smaller sloop. The brigantine was often swifter downwind and more easily maneuvered than a sloop or schooner. This made it popular for pirates. It was also popular with naval forces on missions of reconnoitering, and as tenders for larger ships. The typical brigantine was generally larger than a sloop or schooner, but smaller than a brig.
This model features 3D printed parts: There are two types of 3D printed parts we use in our products. "FDM" is lower cost, and is what most would recognize as traditional 3D printing. This type of model printed in layers from thermal plastic (generally PLA or PETG), and is lightweight with reasonable detail but will have visible striation (or lines) that the hobbyist may want to clean up using putty, primer, or other hobby techniques. "SLA" is a laser cured photo-resin that has exceptional detail, and generally has a much smoother finish without significantly noticeable striation. This type of material is more expensive, and fine details can be more delicate.
Some models may use either or both types of parts, and some models may have the ability for the buyer to select the print type under print options. These models are intended to be painted and may come in different colors.
